Looks very similar to the animated series, hopefully one of her crew fills a role similar to Ivy on the series, she's the best thing about it. 01-09-20, 05:04 PM Join Date: Oct 2001 Location: Fort Lauderdale, FL Posts: 19, 115 That. actually looks like fun, after a disastrous first trailer. Of course there is a possibility that Quinn is a supporting character and they are mis-representing the movie in previews, which could be good for fans of the comic but bad overall. That said, the current spots are actually listing it as "Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey. First time I recall marketing referring to a character instead of the star, but I guess Robbie isn't as well known as the character at this point. I actually think a Quinn solo movie would work, but they would pretty much have to go full on Deadpool with its style to make it work. For all I know that may be what they do with this movie. 01-20-20, 10:55 AM I think I read a while back that she is going to break the fourth wall in this. She probably could support her own film I agree. Not even really sure why they did this as an ensemble movie truthfully. Then with each repeated viewing i hated it more and more, to the point i despise that movie. A lot of people seemed to love that movie when it debuted, so i won't be expecting much from this to say the least. On the plus side, it surely cant be any worse than what came before. I just don't find the Harley Quin character all that interesting. The movie was so good, 100x better than the trailer. “Thats something I learned from the writers of Game of Thrones... ” But didnt this guy also write Game of Thrones? In fact, he appears to be the writer of every major movie and TV show ever. Its over sonic is going to leave the film in the dust. Synopsis You ever hear the one about the cop, the songbird, the psycho and the mafia princess? “Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)” is a twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gothams most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoyas paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down. February 11th, 2020 It was bound to happen, I was just hoping it wouldnt happen this soon, but 2020 suffered its first loss in the year-over-year comparison. Birds of Prey failed to live up to the very low end of expectations opening with just 33 million. On the positive side, the holdovers held on really well and that helped limit losses. In fact, the overall box office was 95 million this weekend, up 18% from last weekend. That said, this is still down 16% from the same weekend last year and this number is a lot more important. Year-to-date, 2020 is still ahead of 2019 by 62 million or 6. 2% at 1. 07 billion to 1. 01 billion, so we clearly shouldnt be panicking this early on, but there are some troubling signs at the box office. More... February 9th, 2020 Birds of Prey is missing even the very low end of expectations with an estimated opening weekend of 33. 25 million. The film is earning good reviews and a decent B plus rating from CinemaScore, and it is also the cheapest installment in the D. C. E. U., so this start isnt disastrous. On the other hand, it is struggling more internationally with just 48 million on 22, 362 screens in 78 markets. Part of this has to do with the coronavirus, which has caused major disruptions in many Asian countries. And Im not just talking about the entertainment industry. So far close to 1, 000 people have died, which is a major disaster. Although to put this into perspective, this flu season, about 10, 000 people have died in the United States alone. February 8th, 2020 Ouch. Birds of Prey only managed 13. 03 million on Friday, putting it on pace for just 32 million to 33 million over the full weekend. This is miles below expectations; its even lower than projections based on Thursdays previews. However, it isnt a bad opening for a film that cost 75 million to make. Add in the films reviews and its B plus from CinemaScore and it should have decent legs, especially with the holiday next weekend. It will be the weakest installment in the D. U. and I think this is clear evidence that making the film R-rated was a mistake. February 7th, 2020 Birds of Prey started its box office run earning 4 million in previews on Thursday. This isnt great. I was really hoping for closer to 5 million. That said, matching our prediction isnt out of the question, as the films audience is tilting heavier towards women and women are less likely to race out to see a movie during previews, or even during its opening weekend. The films reviews are still in the mid-80% range and assuming audiences like it as much as critics did, it will earn enough to cover its production budget sooner rather than later. Its the first weekend of February and the only wide release is Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) the latest installment in the D. There is no question that it will earn first place over the weekend. There is some question about how well it will do during its opening weekend, as ticket pre-sales have been weaker than anticipated. This weekend last year, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part opened with 34. 12 million. Birds of Prey will top that; however, it needs to come close to matching the combined openings of last years top two films, The Lego Movie 2 and What Men Want, in order to have a real shot at leading 2020 to a victory in the year-over-year competition. That doesnt seem as likely as it did last week. February 1st, 2020 We had a great start to the year, sort of. Most films that opened / expanded wide in January are going to miss expectations; however, Bad Boys for Life and 1917 are so much stronger than anticipated that they alone will more than make up the difference. Looking forward, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is almost guaranteed to be the biggest hit of the month. There are two questions. Firstly, is it going to top Bad Boys for Life and become the biggest hit of the year so far? Secondly, is it going to be the only 100 million hit of month? Hopefully the answers to those questions are yes and no respectively, but no to both is would still be good news overall. Sonic the Hedgehog is looking better than before and frankly Paramount needs a hit after a very troubling 2019. Meanwhile, there are several midlevel hits that could help the overall box office. Last February was a mixed month with some hits, like How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, but some disappointing results as well, like from The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. I think it will be a close race in the year-over-year competition with 2020 winning some weeks and losing others. January 10th, 2020 Action movie starring Margot Robbie opens February 7. It is the eighth film in the DC Extended Universe, and a follow-up to Suicide Squad (2016. It was directed by Cathy Yan and written by Christina Hodson, and stars Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Rosie Perez, Chris Messina, Ella Jay Basco, Ali Wong, and Ewan McGregor. The film follows Harley Quinn as she joins forces with Black Canary, Helena Bertinelli, and Renee Montoya to save Cassandra Cain from Gotham City crime lord Black Mask. Robbie, who also serves as producer, pitched the idea for Birds of Prey to Warner Bros. in 2015. The film was announced in May 2016, with Hodson being hired to write the script that November, while Yan signed on to direct in April 2018. The majority of the cast and crew were confirmed by December 2018. Principal photography lasted from January to April 2019 in Downtown Los Angeles, parts of the Arts District, Los Angeles, and soundstages at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California. Additional filming took place in September 2019. Birds of Prey is the first DCEU film and the second DC Films production to be rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America. The film had its world premiere in Mexico City on January 25, 2020, and is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States in IMAX, Dolby Cinema and 4DX on February 7, 2020. Plot After the events of Suicide Squad, the Joker and Harley Quinn have fled back to Gotham. In the midst of their abusive relationship, the Joker breaks up with Harley and kicks her out of their house. Eventually, Harley is taken in by an old man named Doc who owns a Chinese restaurant in the city. After recovering emotionally, Harley goes out clubbing where she spends the night at a club owned by Roman Sionis, a sadistic gangster with cruel tendencies who masquerades as a bubbly nightclub owner. While at the club, Harley meets Dinah Lance, a burlesque singer who works for Roman. Harley becomes intoxicated and acts rowdy in the club, which results in her injuring Roman's driver. Roman's thugs drag Harley outside as a consequence, but Dinah saves her before violence can occur. Impressed by Dinah's skills, Roman appoints her as his new driver. Dinah drops Harley off at the latter's house and Harley decides to remodel her life in many ways, including cutting her hair and adopting a hyena from an exotic pet shop (who she names after Bruce Wayne. Harley also destroys Ace Chemicals, the place where she had pledged herself to Joker before truly becoming Harley Quinn. Meanwhile, Renee Montoya, a police detective in the GCPD, arrives at the scene of Ace Chemicals and determines that because Joker and Harley have broken up, the latter will be easy to capture and arrest. At the same time, Cassandra Cain, a young orphan who works for Sionis as a thief, steals a diamond for him; which has very important information. Roman sends Dinah and his top henchman, a psychotic serial killer named Victor Zsasz, to retrieve it. However, Cass double-crosses him and evades Sionis, hoping to sell the diamond to make more money. Cass is arrested and, out of desperation, swallows the diamond. The following day, Harley is intercepted by Montoya as she walks through Gotham. Harley flees the scene before being ambushed by some of Roman's men. Harley kills her opponents but is captured by other thugs entering the scene. Zsasz and Dinah tell Roman about Cassandra's status. It is shown that Roman likes to wear a black mask – which is an art piece – while torturing people as an intimidation tactic. Dinah and Zsasz also inform him that they captured Harley, and as a result, they have decided to not anticipate retaliation from the Joker, citing Harley's destruction of Ace Chemicals as proof the two have parted ways. Dinah texts Montoya about the situation with Cass, revealing in the process that she is a mole in Roman's organization. Breaking the fourth wall once more, Harley discloses to the audience that they are up-to-date on the events in the film. Harley then overhears Roman talking about the diamond, then offers to retrieve it from Cass if he spares her life. Roman agrees and allots Harley one day. Later, he puts a bounty on Cass's head "to make it more 'fun. Harley disguises herself and breaks into the GCPD to retrieve Cass. Harley breaks Cass out of the holding cells, and the two flee. Harley brings Cass to an abandoned antique shop where the latter is ordered to excrete the diamond to give it back to Roman. However, the two are ambushed by armed goons who are motivated by the bounty on Cass. Harley proceeds to battle and kills them after inhaling cocaine from a damaged bag. The bounty also attracts Helena Bertinelli, a vigilante known as the "crossbow killer. Helena targets mobsters in the hope of avenging her murdered family and also plans to use Cass with the intent to lure Roman out. Meanwhile, Dinah discovers that she has the metahuman ability to scream at a supersonic level. Dinah texts Montoya about the bounty on Cass, but the text is discovered by Zsasz, who informs Roman. Roman flies into a rage, as he strongly dislikes a subordinate not following orders, and he scratches and damages his face in the process. Harley and Cass decide to hide out at Harley's apartment. However, the apartment is bombed by people looking for Cass and it is revealed that Doc sold Harley out to Roman. Harley calls Roman and agrees to turn Cass over in exchange for protection from the bounty as a result of the lack of trust. Roman sends Zsasz and Dinah to retrieve Cass. Zsasz drugs Harley while showing that Roman didn't honor their deal, and Dinah tries to free Cass. However, Zsasz, having already known about Dinah's treachery, attacks her but is unexpectedly killed by Helena, who arrives at the amusement park. The women are all placed under arrest by Montoya, who Dinah had texted with regard to the situation. Harley manages to convince the women to work together to fight off Roman, even though the others were initially reluctant. The women use Harley's old gear and weapons to attack arriving hordes of Roman's goons, eventually emerging victorious. Cass is captured by Roman, and Harley pursues them to a nearby pier. Once Harley catches up with them, Cassandra puts a grenade in Roman's suit, killing him. In the aftermath of destroying Roman's empire, Montoya, Dinah and Helena start the Birds of Prey with the money from the accounts of the diamond while Harley and Cassandra pawn it and start their own company together. In a post-credits scene, Harley talks about the new Batman film and before the trailer starts, the screen cuts to black. Cast Margot Robbie as Harleen Quinzel / Harley Quinn: A former psychiatrist who became a crazed criminal and Joker 's accomplice and girlfriend, but has since broken up with him and become a solo vigilante. She is part of the Suicide Squad. [3] Screenwriter Christina Hodson sought to reinvent Harley, wanting to expand on the character following her departure from the Joker. [4] Hodson called Harley the character she enjoyed developing most due to her unpredictable personality. [5] Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Helena Bertinelli / Huntress: A vigilante who is the orphaned daughter of mafia syndicate gangster, Franco Bertinelli. [6] 7] 8] Ella Mika portrays a young Helena Bertinelli, during flashback scenes. [8] 20] Bojana Novakovic portrays as Erika. Talon Reid portrays one of Black Mask's henchmen. Production Development In May 2016, ahead of the release of Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. Pictures announced a spinoff film focusing on Harley Quinn and several other female DC Comics heroes and villains, such as Batgirl and the Birds of Prey. Margot Robbie was attached to reprise her role as Harley Quinn, and would also serve as producer. [3] 22] British screenwriter Christina Hodson was announced to be writing the film in November. [23] Robbie pitched the film to Warner Bros. in 2015 as "an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, Harley needs friends. Harley loves interacting with people, so don't ever make her do a standalone film. Robbie felt it was important for the film to have a female director. While Warner Bros. and DC Films had various other Harley Quinn-oriented films in development, Birds of Prey was the only one in which Robbie was directly involved with its development. [24] Robbie spent three years working on Birds of Prey and continued to present it to Warner Bros. until the studio felt the project was at the point it could be made. [24] By April 2018, Warner Bros. and DC Films had finalized a deal with Cathy Yan to direct, making her the first female Asian director to direct a superhero film. [25] Robbie was confirmed to be producing the film under her LuckyChap Entertainment banner, as part of a first look deal she has with the studio; Sue Kroll and Bryan Unkless were also announced to serve as producers through their companies Kroll & Co. Entertainment and Clubhouse Pictures, respectively. Production was scheduled to begin by late 2018 or early 2019. Gayner, Jayson Merrill franchise: DC Extended Universe budget: 75 million cinematographer: Matthew Libatique After splitting up with The Joker, Harley Quinn and three other female superheroes - Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya - come together to save the life of a little girl (Cassandra Cain) from an evil crime lord. Artwork is from Suicide Squad. This DC Comics film is based on the Birds of Prey title, which was first published in November 1995. It was created by Jordan B. Gorfinkel and Chuck Dixon. The movie entered development back in 2016, with writer Christina Hodson signing on to pen the script. In 2018, Cathy Yan was hired as director. Margot Robbie is set to reprise her role as Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad and is also producing.
Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) is pulled into the hunt for street hustler Cassandra (Ella Jay Basco) by gangster Roman Sionis (Ewan McGregor) along with singer Dinah (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) vigilante Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and detective Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez. At the behest of star and producer Margot Robbie, the working title for (deep breath) Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) was ‘Fox Force Five. For the uninitiated, ‘Fox Force Five is Mia Wallaces ( Uma Thurman) never-aired TV pilot in Pulp Fiction concerning five female secret agents each with a distinct identity and skill — a knife thrower, a kung fu master, a demolition expert and a French girl whose “speciality was sex”. Its a particularly apt part-time alias for Robbies passion project, the first big-screen outing for DCs all-women superhero squad. Because Birds Of Prey not only shares the DNA of a girl gang who can kick your sorry ass — Cathy Yan s film also boasts some of the subversive and rockabilly spirit of QTs 94 classic. It doesnt all work, but its a gaudy, muddled, mostly entertaining glitter-grenade celebration of just how women can fuck shit up. Perhaps the first rug-pull is that it isnt strictly a Birds Of Prey flick at all. Its a moving-on-after-a-break-up movie, a Marriage Story with punch-ups. Quickly recapping the events of Suicide Squad in animated form, we quickly learn Robbies Harley Quinn and Joker have broken up — she publically updates her relationship status by driving a truck into Ace Chemicals, the plant where she pledged herself to the clown prince of crime — and the film frenetically establishes her trying to cope on her own; buying a hyena she calls Bruce (after Wayne) roller derbying, her partying antics captured in one long shot like a coked-up 1917. The film sets up the question of who is Harley without Mr J? The answer lies with a motley crew of diverse women. Its a fun, fidgety, breathless start, but dont expect it to settle any time soon. The film is narrated by Harley Quinn so unravels with all the logic youd expect from her cracked psyche. Taking a cue from her protagonist, screenwriter Christina Hodson ( Bumblebee) begins to fracture the narrative, drip-feeding plot points and introducing us to the major players; Renee Montoya ( Perez) a detective belittled in her job and hooked on the dialogue and tropes of 80s cop shows, is investigating a hit by crossbow-wielding assassin Huntress ( Winstead) Dinah Lance ( Smollett-Bell) a singer who goes by the monicker Black Canary and is capable of smashing martini glasses with her voice, powerfully warbles in the nightclub of Gotham crime lord Roman Sionis ( McGregor) and then there is Cassandra Cain (Basco) a streetwise pickpocket who becomes the fulcrum for the story. Its so much fun when the group finally come together, it feels like a misstep not getting them together sooner. Its not, as Harley might say, poifect. Its structurally chaotic. There are flashbacks within flashbacks and comedy title-cards (“4 Minutes Ago”) but the time-shifting dissipates momentum in the middle stretch — you never get the sense that Yan, whose only previous feature is absurdist satire Dead Pigs, has a firm grip on the narrative. McGregors antagonist — who runs the town and has a penchant for both African art and peeling the face off rivals — nibbles rather than chews scenery; he isnt big and flamboyant enough to pose a genuine threat. Yan and Hodson throw a ton of ideas at the screen, most of which stick: Harley interacting with her own voiceover, Marilyn Monroe fantasies, direct stares to camera, and a fun running gag about the grievances every character has with Ms Quinn — the most exquisite delivers a terrific Frida Kahlo gag. Conceived with John Wick s Chad Staheski and his stunt team 87Eleven, the action sequences are muscular and confident — a creative baseball bat frenzy to Ram Jams ‘Black Betty (bam-a-lam) a fight in a fun house that has the feel of 60s Batman — but Yan still manages to insert some personality in there: as Harley double teams with Black Canary, keep em peeled for a hair-tie handoff that any woman in a fight would relate to. Its a lovely touch that would never occur to the David Ayers of this world. Its a film forged in the age of #MeToo. TimesUp but wears any messaging lightly. This is just a group of women supporting each other, getting things done. Its so much fun when the group finally come together, it feels like a misstep not getting them together sooner and more often. Save Harley, the characters arent deeply drawn but they are winningly played: Smollett-Bell is authentically hard-as-nails, Winstead is funny as an assassin who takes umbrage that people get her superhero name wrong, and Perez reminds you she is not in nearly enough movies. But the MVP is Robbie, who lends Harley charming quirk and believable menace, hinting at Harleys inner life without reams of dialogue. When shes on screen Birds Of Prey has the impact of a baseball bat to the head. Its messy, with a middle section that sags, but Birds Of Prey has vibrancy, anarchy and balls to spare. Harley and Joker are dead. Long live Harley Quinn.

Real quick I'll say: McGregor delivers my favorite villain performance. Smollet-Bell & Winstead are terrific. Movie is beautiful, fun, choreography rules, the humor really worked for me, almost gets too Deadpool -y but bounces back, it's easily my favorite DC film since The… female supremacy ○ く, へ 〉 ̄ ̄┗┓ man babies ┗┓ ヾ○シ ┗┓ ヘ/ ┗┓ノ ┗┓ Its safe to say that this was an absolute collapse and I collapsed 2020 ranked Intermittently very clever and frequently very funny, punctuated with a lot of sturdy action choreography and sharp editing (courtesy Chad Stahelski, I'm led to believe. The flashback structure kills a ton of momentum though, and this meanders a lot until the characters finally team up (it helps that all of the actresses are a lot of fun to watch. Personally I'd have liked it if Harley Quinn seemed a bit more vicious and scary, but that's not the movie they're selling here. MVP Ewan McKraken. Marty would call this. cinema. 43 Harley Quinn voted for Bernie and owns a pet hyena. That alone makes it better than Joker. I love the *idea* of a colorful DC carnival ride like this, insufferably long title and all, but the first half is dire. Poor narration and a structure that can only be described as pointless essentially halts much of Birds of Prey to slog status. The action in the climax is pretty fun, and solid from a technical standpoint, deploying long-takes, slow-motion, and a coherent sense of style, although it's far too late to attempt to cover up the lingering Suicide Squad stench. All of these characters, even Harley Quinn, are cardboard cutouts, and their backstories are interminable subplots folding in on… Recent reviews It's strange that a movie dedicated to distancing itself from Suicide Squad would take as many opportunities as possible to remind the audience of it's connection. I hope most of the budget went to Margot Robbie and the film's stunt coordinator, because they were the only aspects that had a shot at shining through the 13-year-old's idea of plot and humor at the core of this movie. Harley takes you on a Warner Brother's lot tour through music video set pieces and non-sequiturs with an awkward, uninspired, classic pop soundtrack over the loudspeakers. all of the women in this r so hot i want to be punched by harley quinn this movie is so unexpectedly gay and has badass women that kick ass the entire movie, a lot of men will be scared here. Although i felt the new characters were underdeveloped, where after their initial introductions, we don't really care as much as the rest of the film expect us to be. Huntress was awesome, Mary Elizabeth Winstead murdering someone on a slide was pure awesome. Anyway, i really like Margot's direction with Harley. Her production company actually produces this film, and that changes with the look, feel and direction was really refreshing. But again, with a lame villain and new characters that didn't really work for me, it was a letdown that gave me hope for the future at the same time. the action is better than most marvel films but still left a lot to be desired. margot robbie is fantabulous as always. hopefully the film makes profit so we can have more movies like this in the future Queen Black Canary singing Its A Mans Mans Mans World. Margot Robbie was attached to reprise her role as Harley Quinn, and would also serve as producer. British screenwriter Christina Hodson was announced to be writing the film in November. Robbie pitched the film to Warner Bros. in 2015 as "an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, ‘Harley needs friends. Harley loves interacting with people, so dont ever make her do a standalone film. Robbie felt it was important for the film to have a female director. By April 2018, Warner Bros. and DC Films had finalized a deal with Cathy Yan to direct, making her the first female Asian director to direct a superhero film. Additionally, Robbie was confirmed to be producing the film under her LuckyChap Entertainment banner, as part of a first-look deal she has with the studio; Sue Kroll and Bryan Unkeless were also announced to serve as producers through their companies Kroll & Co. Entertainment and Clubhouse Pictures, respectively. Production was scheduled to begin by late 2018 or early 2019. Birds of Prey is the second DC Extended Universe (DCEU) film featuring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, pushing the then-untitled Suicide Squad sequel (now known as The Suicide Squad) out of the 2018 production schedule. By late April, two different versions of the script were in development; both included Harley Quinn and Batgirl, while one of them featured the Oswald Cobblepot as the main villain. The latter script was eventually dropped to preserve the Oswald Cobblepot's debut in a Batman solo film (as teased in Justice League. By May 2018, production was scheduled to begin in January 2019. By June, both Huntress and Black Canary were expected to appear in the film. It was reported that the budget was 75 million, the lowest of any DCEU film. [18] The film was rumored to have an R-rating, being the first R-rated DCEU film. Regarding the film's R-rating, star Margot Robbie stated that the rating allowed the cast to take things to the next level in regards to the film's fight scenes. Director Cathy Yan stated that she was grateful that the rating allowed her to take the characters' story where it needed to go. Mary Elizabeth Winstead described the film as taking a "no-holds barred" approach. [19] Pre-production By July 2018, the film was entering pre-production. Robbie confirmed the film would be titled Birds of Prey, describing it as "different" from the other DC films featuring Harley Quinn, and said it would be produced on a relatively small budget compared to other superhero films. She also stated that Harley Quinn would receive a new costume, and teased the casting of diverse actors. The line-up for the Birds of Prey team was revealed to include Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain, and Renee Montoya, with the villain set to be a Batman adversary who had not yet been seen in any Batman film. Casting began in August, with Warner Bros. considering several actresses to be cast as Huntress and Black Canary. Alexandra Daddario, Jodie Comer, Blake Lively, and Vanessa Kirby all expressed interest. Additionally, Black Mask was revealed to be the film's antagonist. Later that month, Warner Bros. revealed it was interested in casting a biracial actress to play Black Canary. Janelle Monáe, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Jurnee Smollett-Bell were under consideration for the role by September, while Sofia Boutella, Margaret Qualley, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Cristin Milioti were being considered to play Huntress. Justina Machado and Roberta Colindrez tested for Renee Montoya, while Warner Bros. began seeking a 12-year-old Asian actress to play Cassandra Cain. In late September, Smollett-Bell and Winstead were respectively cast as Black Canary and Huntress, Warner Bros. scheduled a February 7, 2020 release date, and Ewan McGregor and Sharlto Copley were under consideration for the role of Black Mask. During the U. S. -China Entertainment Summit in October, Yan confirmed the cast and that the film would be R-rated. She said that she "could not put the script down, it had so much dark humor to it which a lot of my work does, and there are themes of female empowerment which are so strong and relatable. Cinematographer Matthew Libatique joined the film that month, as did Rosie Perez, who was cast as Renee Montoya. Stunt coordinator Jonathan Eusebio and fight coordinator Jon Valera joined in November, along with Ewan McGregor as Black Mask and Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain. Additionally, Robbie revealed that the full title would be Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) and that the subtitle reflects the humorous and lighter tone of the film. Production designer K. K. Barrett joined in December, as did Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz. Steven Williams, Derek Wilson, Dana Lee, François Chau, Matthew Willig, Ali Wong, and Robert Catrini all joined the film's cast as well. Filming Principal photography began in Los Angeles, California on January 14, 2019, under the production title "Fox Force Five. Filming also took place in Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia, and was completed on April 15, 2019. On August 16, 2019, Chad Stahelski was reportedly brought in to oversee reshoots for the film. [20] Post-production Method Studios will provide the visual effects for the film. [21] Reception The film has received early positive social media buzz. Katie Walsh of the LA Times described it as "a totally campy and brutal carnival ride" and tipped Ewan McGregor for a Best Supporting Actor role. Laura Prodom of IGN stated that she had low expectations going to into the film, but was pleasantly surprised by it, stating that while it doesn't reinvent the wheel, it has "style to spare. 22] An early report indicated disappointing pre-release ticket sales, with a Lose Angeles theater insider describing sales as being "dead in the water. 23] However, a conflicting report indicated strong enthusiasm for the film, stating that it outdid both Wonder Woman and Suicide Squad in its first-day presales. Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) s soundtrack gets a trailer that features a fourth wall joke from the DCEU movie. Warner Bros. has released an official movie soundtrack trailer for Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. As much as comic book movies dominated the box office throughout the 2010s, they were far less successful when it came to making waves in the music industry. There were, of course, some big exceptions to that rule. The compilation soundtracks for James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 & 2 were both extremely popular, with Vol. 1 's song collection becoming the third top-selling vinyl album of the last ten years. David Ayer's Suicide Squad movie soundtrack also topped the charts in 2016 and even landed a Grammy nod for its Collector's Edition. Next month's Birds of Prey features Margot Robbie back in the role of Harley Quinn for the first time since Suicide Squad, pairing her with a new squad of vigilante-types that includes Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez. The official Birds of Prey soundtrack looks as off-the-walls as the R-rated DC movie itself, with tunes by artists like Halsey, Doja Cat, and Adona, to name but a handful. It's even received its own preview, to further build anticipation ahead of its release on February 7 (the same day the film opens. Warner Bros. has now dropped the trailer for the Birds of Prey soundtrack online and it features some previously-unreleased footage from the movie, in addition to a gag where Harley (in typical fashion) breaks the fourth wall. You can check it out, below. The trailer starts off by highlighting Birds of Prey soundtrack producer Atlantic Records' biggest recent releases, which includes Suicide Squad: The Album, The Greatest Showman 's soundtrack, and the original Broadway cast recording for Hamilton. From there, the preview offers a small taste of how the movie's singles (like Saweetie & Galxara's "Sway With Me" and Megan Thee Stallion & Normani's "Diamonds" compliment its madcap tone and boldly vibrant color palette. As many were quick to note when the album was first listed, Birds of Prey boasts an all-female team of singers and/or songwriters, in addition to a primary cast and crew of mostly women ( director Cathy Yan and writer Christina Hodson included. It's appropriate too, given the film's general girl gang adventure vibe. Obviously, a terrific soundtrack doesn't guarantee the movie will be equally beloved ( Suicide Squad alone is proof of that. It bodes well for Birds of Prey all the same, suggesting everyone associated with the film is on the same page when it comes to the mood and style they're going for. Robbie, meanwhile, just snagged her second acting Oscar nomination for Bombshell and played a larger creative role on this movie than she did on Suicide Squad, as evidenced by her official co-producer credit. That's equally encouraging and suggests Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) might yet prove to be as great as it sounds. Plot [ edit] After the events of Suicide Squad, the Joker and Harley Quinn have fled back to Gotham. In the midst of their abusive relationship, the Joker breaks up with Harley and kicks her out of their house. Eventually, Harley is taken in by an old man named Doc who owns a Taiwanese restaurant in the city. Harley calls Roman and agrees to turn Cass over in exchange for protection from the bounty as a result in the lack of trust. Cast [ edit] Margot Robbie as Harleen Quinzel / Harley Quinn: A former psychiatrist who became a crazed criminal and Joker 's accomplice and girlfriend, but has since broken up with him and become a solo vigilante. [9] Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Dinah Laurel Lance / Black Canary [6] 7] 10] A vigilante with the metahuman ability of hypersonic screams, who is also a singer in a club that Sionis owns. [11] Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya [12] 13] A Gotham City Police Detective, who is building a case against Sionis. Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz: A deranged serial killer and henchman of Sionis who carves a tally mark on his skin for each victim he claims. [14] Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain: A young girl who has a contract killing placed upon her head by Sionis, after she steals a valuable diamond from him. [12] 15] Ali Wong [16] 14] Ewan McGregor as Roman Sionis / Black Mask: A brutal and iron-fisted crime lord who threatens Cassandra. [17] 18] McGregor described the character as "an absolute narcissist. 19] Additionally, Charlene Amoia and Paul Lasa portray Maria and Franco Bertinelli, the mother and father of Helena, respectively. [8] 20] Bojana Novakovic portrays as Erika. Talon Reid portrays one of Black Mask's henchmen. [21] Steven Williams, Derek Wilson, Dana Lee, François Chau, Matt Willig, and Robert Catrini have been cast in undisclosed roles. Production [ edit] Development [ edit] In May 2016, ahead of the release of Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. [26] The Penguin was intended to appear in the script at one point, but was dropped to preserve his DC Extended Universe debut in The Batman. [27] Pre-production [ edit] By July 2018, the film was entering pre-production. [28] Robbie confirmed the film would be titled Birds of Prey, describing it as "different" from the other DC films featuring Harley Quinn, and said it would be produced on a relatively small budget compared to other superhero films. [29] 30] She also stated that Harley Quinn would receive a new costume, and teased the casting of diverse actors. [31] The line-up for the Birds of Prey team was revealed to include Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain, and Renee Montoya, with the villain set to be a Batman adversary who had not yet been seen in film. [12] Casting began in August, 32] with Warner Bros. considering a number of actresses to be cast as Huntress and Black Canary. Alexandra Daddario, Jodie Comer, Blake Lively, and Vanessa Kirby expressed interest. [33] 34] Roman Sionis / Black Mask was revealed to be the film's antagonist. [35] Janelle Monáe, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Jurnee Smollett-Bell were under consideration for Black Canary by September, while Sofia Boutella, Margaret Qualley, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Cristin Milioti were being considered to play Huntress. [36] Justina Machado and Roberta Colindrez tested for Renee Montoya, while Warner Bros. began seeking a 12-year-old Asian actress to play Cassandra Cain. [37] In late September, Smollett-Bell and Winstead were respectively cast as Black Canary and Huntress, 6] Warner Bros. scheduled a February 7, 2020 release date, 38] and Ewan McGregor and Sharlto Copley were under consideration for the role of Black Mask. [39] During the U. S. -China Entertainment Summit in October, Yan confirmed the cast and that the film would be R-rated. She said that she "could not put the script down, it had so much dark humor to it which a lot of my work does, and there are themes of female empowerment which are so strong and relateable. 40] Cinematographer Matthew Libatique joined the film that month, 41] as did Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya. [13] Stunt coordinator Jonathan Eusebio and fight coordinator Jon Valera joined in November [42] along with McGregor as Black Mask [17] and Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain. [15] Robbie revealed that the full title would be Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. 43] and that the subtitle reflects the humorous and unserious tone of the film. [44] Production designer K. K. Barrett joined in December, 45] as did Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz. [14] Steven Williams, Derek Wilson, Dana Lee, François Chau, Matthew Willig, Robert Catrini, and Ali Wong also joined the film's cast. [16] 14] Filming [ edit] Principal photography began in Los Angeles, California in January 2019 under the working title Fox Force Five. [46] 47] 48] Although filming was expected to also take place in Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia, 49] the entire shoot took place in Los Angeles after the production received a tax credit from the state of California. [50] Filming was expected to be completed by mid-April 2019. [51] In February, Charlene Amoia joined the cast. [8] Filming wrapped on April 15, 2019. [52] Post-production [ edit] Jay Cassidy and Evan Schiff will serve as editors. Method Studios, Weta Digital, Luma Pictures, Image Engine and Crafty Apes will provide the visual effects for the film. [60] A soundtrack album for the film, titled Birds of Prey: The Album, was announced in January 2020 and is also scheduled to be released on February 7 by Atlantic Records. To promote the album, a single was released every Friday before the films release. [61. Boss Bitch" by Doja Cat was released on January 24 and "Sway with Me" by Saweetie and GALXARA was released on January 31. [64] Marketing [ edit] Marketing began on the January 21, 2019, when a first-look production video of the characters and costumes titled "See You Soon" was released by Warner Bros. via YouTube. [65] DC Comics published a promotional trade paperback anthology featuring stories based on the film on November 12, 2019. [66] The first teaser debuted exclusively in theatres on September 5, 2019, in front of screenings for It: Chapter Two, with Quinn stating that she is "over clowns" while popping a red balloon, in a collective reference to It / Pennywise the Dancing Clown and the Joker. [67] A three-days pop-up events named Harleywood was also organized at the Hollywood and Highland Center with the presence of the cast on the launch day. Artists from the soundtrack where also present to promote the album, with Charlotte Lawrence and Doja Cat performing their songs. [68] Release [ edit] Birds of Prey is scheduled to be theatrically released by Warner Bros. Pictures in the United States on February 7, 2020 in standard, IMAX, Dolby Cinema, 4DX and ScreenX formats. [38] 69] 70] The film had its world premiere on January 25, 2020 at the Proyecto Publico Prim in Mexico City. [71] It also screened on January 29 at the BFI IMAX in London, and on January 30 at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes during a special event named Le Festival de Quinn ( The Quinn's Festival) in reference to the Cannes Film Festival. [72] 73] A short teaser was released on the film's social media pages, announcing the first official trailer would be released on October 1, 2019. A series of posters, which also announced the trailer debut, were released the same day. [74] On December 5, 2019, Birds of Prey held a panel at the annual CCXP in Brazil. They showed the first 5 minutes of the film and the second official trailer, which was released online on January 9, 2020. Birds of prey and the fantabulous emancipation of one harley quinn album. 3 / 5 stars 3 out of 5 stars. Mesmerising Margot Robbie returns as the hyperactive supervillain in a crass but weirdly watchable spin-off from Suicide Squad Kick-ass variant on nymphet … Margot Robbie in Birds of Prey. Photograph: Claudette Barius W atching Birds of Prey, a line from the recent Fox News sexual harassment drama Bombshell occurred to me – when Kate McKinnon looks deep into Margot Robbie s eyes over cocktails and says, wonderingly: “Thats quite some face youve got there. ” And it is. Robbies capacity for pop-eyed, crazy-cyborg grinning is certainly put to work in this weirdly watchable hyperactive supervillain comedy, an ADHD-aspartame overload written by Christina Hodson and directed by Cathy Yan. Its a spin-off from DCs little-loved Suicide Squad, in which Robbie plays Harley Quinn, clothed in an eccentric kick-ass variant on nymphet: Lolita meets Cynthia Rothrock. She was the inamorata of Jared Letos Joker in that film and now returns as an antiheroine in her own right. Harley and the Joker have broken up (he dumped her) and, in a rage-filled search for emotional closure, Harley steals a gasoline tanker and drives it into the chemical factory that was the site of their first romantic encounters – jumping clear at the last moment. The resulting explosion and its aftermath precipitate a meeting of five women from all over Gotham who operate on different sides of the law: 80s-style cop Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) mob heiress turned crossbow killer Helena Bertinelli (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) nightclub singer and martial arts enthusiast Dinah Lance (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and pickpocket Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco. Harley is to find herself in conflict with all of them but is also, in a way, in league with them prima inter pares. The quest for a mega-valuable diamond animates the jittery, fragmented narrative, which zooms around all over the place and also brings in hideous club-owner and rich criminal Roman Sionis ( Ewan McGregor) who among his many sins is a culturally insensitive collector of African art. Hodsons script, with its insistent voiceover, narrative shuffling, wackily choreographed punch-ups and exotic villains introduced in surtitle freezeframe, is a cheeky borrowing from Kill Bill (with one assailants resemblance to Frida Kahlo incidentally coming in for some derisive commentary) and I enjoyed the influence of screenwriter Shane Black (the creator of Lethal Weapon and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) in the description of Montoya, particularly that supremely ominous moment when she is told to hand in her gun and her badge. As Harley sagely puts it: “No cop ever gets stuff done until after theyve been suspended. ” As well as the DC origins, there is also an echo of Frank Millers Sin City graphic novels, filmed by Robert Rodriguez. This film is a blitz of bad taste, a cornucopia of crass, and it is weirdly diverting – more than you might expect, given the frosty way Suicide Squad was received critically – and engagingly crazy. Watching it feels cheerfully excessive and unwholesome, like smoking a cigarette and eating a chocolate bar at the same time. • Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is released in Australia on 6 February and in the UK and the US on 7 February.
